Grateful Thanks

Church The Villager

Thank you to all those who held the fort during the interregnum. Since Ben Flenley’s departure a small band of people have valiantly maintained all the facilities of our village church in a most commendable fashion. At the beginning none of them knew how long it would be before the announcement of our new Priest in Charge, but this did not deter them from carrying on. Among those involved were Mr Dunwoody, and other members of the parochial church council; Stella Burnett, and the other ladies of the Guild of St Martha; and most importantly, in regard to the care of all the outside areas and grounds, Charlie Phillips and those valiant members of his labouring force. Also, mention of Sue Phillips and other ladies who have continued to produce lovely floral decorations in the church and not least to Chris Hurley and his team of skilled Campanologists. ...

Bentworth Bike Club

Events The Villager

On the 14th July, sixteen members of the BBC (Bentworth Bike Club) together with 2 support vehicles, one driven by the husband of a cyclist and their daughter and the other containing our bags and baggage, left Bentworth to cycle to Portsmouth. We caught the overnight ferry to Ouistreham, France and then cycled along the Normandy Beaches before departing from Cherbourg 3 days later having covered approx. 170 miles. The age range of the cyclist was 16-70 and of various abilities, some wanted to add miles to the direct route and others took the easiest way. Everyone stopped to admire the views, visit some of the WW2 memorials and sup the odd coffee or glass of something local. The memorials along this part of the French coast, including the Pegasus Bridge and Arromanches, made us all stand back and think about the horrors of war and the sacrifices of not just the service men and women but also the local people who sheltered and assisted them. ...

The Kathryn Mercy Home

Church The Villager

Way back in 1988 Ben and I were introduced to Reverend Jeyapaul from Tamil Nadu in Southern India. Little did we know that this was to be the start of a friendship which would stand the test of time and result in hundreds of lives being transformed by the dedication of Jeyapaul and his son Charles, and by the formation of the Kathryn’s Mercy Home Trust. ...
